Apple on Tuesday reported a record-breaking quarter with $28.57 billion in revenue

Apple on Tuesday reported a record-breaking quarter with $28.57 billion in revenue, propelled by a massive 20.34 million iPhones and 9.25 million iPads sold in the quarter. Following the news, Apple executives participated in a conference call with analysts and the press, and notes of interest follow.

Apple's iPhone and iPad products continue to send the company to even greater heights, as handset sales were up 142 percent year over year, and the iPad grew 183 percent from 2010. Its $28.57 billion in revenue was a record-breaking quarter.

Final Cut Pro X delivers but it will take time getting used to the new

Final Cut Pro X (version 10.0) arrived 8:30 a.m. yesterday morning at the App Store for $299, unleashing torrents of criticism about missing features and a perceived drift from professional product to one that consumers might find friendlier.

So far, so good.

Let me explain.

I, too, had an advance copy (version 9.9.1.77) and wrestled to overcome personal expectations of what a 64-bit next-gen Final Cut should be, given the countless hours of my life spent in front of this revolutionary NLE since it first introduced us to FireWire and DV editing back in 1999.

As I wrote last night to Filmmaker editor Scott Macaulay, who has been keenly tracking FCP X since its sneak peek at NAB in April, “I’ve had problems with FCP X too, but since when is the unfamiliar a comfortable ride?”

iPad Is #1 Pick for Tablets

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - May 12, 2011) - Android market share and popularity among consumers continues to climb, but business professionals generally prefer the iPhone, according to Intermedia, the world's largest Microsoft Exchange hosting provider. Intermedia, which manages 320,000 premium hosted Exchange email accounts, reviewed the number of ActiveSync1-based smartphones its customers activated. Sixty-one percent choose the iPhone, while only 17 percent prefer the Android. This is in stark contrast to recent reports2 showing Android market share beating iPhone. Intermedia also finds that the iPad is a business favorite with 99.8 percent of tablet customers picking the Apple brand over the Samsung Galaxy or Motorola Xoom.

Intermedia's business email and collaboration services support the full range of smartphones and tablets, including iPhone, Android devices, and BlackBerry. Other smartphone stats from Intermedia include:

  • Total breakdown of ActiveSync-based smartphone's activated on Intermedia's service:
    • 61 percent on iPhone
    • 22 percent on "Other" (primarily Windows, followed by Symbian and Palm)
    • 17 percent on Android
    •
  • ActiveSync devices activated in April: iPhone is still in the number one spot and increased its share to 64 percent. Android share is climbing fast with 33 percent.
  •
  • Tablets activated in April: Close to 100 percent of new tablets were iPads, with just a tiny fraction activating the Samsung Galaxy and Motorola Xoom.
  • iPad popularity is growing dramatically: Intermedia typically sees approximately 300 new iPads activated in a month. They saw a jump to over 900 in March and over 1,200 in April.
  •

Note: No specific user or account action/email was reviewed by Intermedia in determining these statistics. The BlackBerry remains a central component to Intermedia's mobility offering, but this data is specific to ActiveSync devises, which does not include hosted BlackBerry.

"Professionals want to sync and manage their business email, contacts, and calendars across their computers, smartphones, and tablets," says Jonathan McCormick, COO, Intermedia. "They also want to use the brands of their choice. Supporting these options can strain an IT department accustomed to managing only one type of device -- or an entrepreneur with no IT staff to help with set up. Email services like Intermedia's deliver these productivity capabilities with the click of a mouse and back them up with 24x7 support from certified professionals."

In addition to hosted Microsoft Exchange 2010, as well as other Microsoft products such as Office Communications Server 2007 and SharePoint 2010, Intermedia offers an integrated suite of cloud communications and collaboration services. These services include Encrypted Email, Online Backup, Hosted PBX, and Conference Bridges. All Intermedia services are set up and managed from Intermedia's HostPilot® Control Panel.

Apple iPad2 sales out and the lines were even longer than the iPhone4 lines!

Many retail partners sold out their very limited iPad 2 inventories on launch day, but a variety of well stocked Apple Stores ran out of many or all models as well after a launch extravaganza that maintained hundreds of people in hours-long lines throughout the evening.

In San Francisco, Best Buy sold out of its inventory right away, while Apple's own Stonestown store was out of stock within two hours of going on sale. Staffers there estimated they wouldn't have many tomorrow either. Apple's flagship Union Street store downtown ran out of WiFi iPad 2 models, but still had a stock of 3G versions for both AT&T and Verizon, at least of the 32 and 64GB variety, and only in black. It planned to remain open through midnight to offer remaining supplies to the hundreds standing in line

Store staffers plied the line (which for hours continued to stretch around four sides of the block back to the rear door of Apple's store) updating customers about which models were still available as they waited. One customer remarked he'd been standing in line at Best Buy for two hours before employees at that store finally told people in line that they'd sold out, noting with some frustration that he "knew he should have come to the Apple Store."
