Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5.1 released today

IBM and its Lotus division released Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5.1 today. The new version adds a number of features with the top feature being the addition of Iphone support in the traveler product line. The Iphone has been supported in the past thru Inotes Web Access with a light interface. Iphone users can now access the domino server with full fidelity with ActiveSync technology for push notifications.

The 8.5.1 release also includes a number of important updates to the Notes client allowing faster performance and also a number of changes to allow current Notes users to continue to use the features in the Notes specific ways rather than the new Microsoft inspired highlight, shift, click for selection of email messages. There is Expanded Quickr integration within the product and support for the new Lotus Protector software. The big change for developers is support for Xpages in the Notes 8.5.1 client, this is huge! Xpages allows for an AJAX type web 2.0 interfaces in Lotus Notes applications.

Domino Designer is now a free product for customers that have Lotus Domino license. This is a huge area as it will allow more folks access to the development process. In a University environment this is clearly a winner. The Dojo JavaScript framework has been updated to version 1.3.2 and there is now improved integration to use DOJO in XPages.

There is a new design element for building iWidgets that should improve the integration of widgets into the Notes Client. Lotus Enterprise Integrator has been updated to support ODBC 5.3.2 and now includes better support for MYSQL 5.1 integration.

The product's last fix pack to the 8.5 version improved performance and also stability in a number of areas. 8.5.1 Increases performance and lowers the memory consumption of the product which allows a workstation with less memory to run the standard version.

Finally there has been a repackaging of the Domino Client solutions to simplify the available solutions for the workforce. The new options are Enterprise CAL or Messaging CAL for solutions to your collaboration needs. The Enterprise CAL unleashes access from any device or the desktop for access to your Lotus assets along with Lotus Designer, Quickr, Symphony and Lotus Mobile connect clients. The messaging client CAL limits access to Lotus Notes, iNotes, and Lotus Traveler with a focus on email and calendaring and scheduling.

These solutions will be available on October 12, 2009 for electronic delivery.
