iPhone 4s stock still running low as the phone sales continue to be strong

The iPhone 4S was quite a popular little handset over its launch weekend, with Apple announcing that it sold over four million units within the first few days of availability. Unsurprisingly, this led to sell-outs most everywhere, leaving many customers that opted not to pre-order without a 4S or a clue as to when they might get a chance to buy one. One might think that now that 4S stock might be more plentiful now that we're nearly a month removed from launch, but according to Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore, that's not the case. Whitmore recently contacted both online and brick and mortar stores belonging to Apple and the three U.S. carriers that offer the iPhone and found that on average, the wait time for a 4S came out to around 14 days. Around 85 to 90 percent of the 30 Apple stores contacted by Whitmore reported that they're running out of 4S stock every day, despite the fact that new shipments come in fairly frequently (sometimes even daily).

iPhone 4S preorders sell out in Hong Kong after 10 minutes

After becoming available for preorder in Hong Kong last Friday, the iPhone 4S sold out almost immediately, once again demonstrating Apple's continued success in China.

Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities said his checks with sources indicated iPhone 4S preorders sold out in their first 10 minutes of availability in Hong Kong on Friday. The iPhone 4S will become available in Hong Kong and 14 other countries this Friday.

"In our view, this is a very positive sign for iPhone 4S demand in Greater China has Hong Kong represents the first entry of the new smartphone in the rapidly growing region, and we expect the 4S to reach Mainland China in December," White said in a note to investors on Monday.

"We believe this rapid sell out will rest concerns surrounding the uptake of the iPhone 4S in the Greater China region that were driven by the limited language capability of Siri, which did not launch in Mandarin or Cantonese."

Apple's voice recognition technology is one of the major new features found in the iPhone 4S, though Siri currently remains labeled "beta" software. Currently Siri only understands English from the U.S., U.K. and Australia, as well as French and German, though Apple has promised that it will support additional languages in 2012, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian and Spanish.

A strong start for the iPhone 4S in China is particularly good news for Apple, as the nation of over a billion people has become an important part of the company's continued growth. In Apple's September quarter, Greater China accounted for $4.5 billion in revenue, which represented 16 percent of the company's total sales.

To put the numbers in perspective, Apple's revenue in China was up 270 percent year over year. And in the company's 2009 fiscal year, China represented just 2 percent of Apple's revenue.

Steve Jobs inspired me to work in Information Technology

I remember the 1984 Super bowl commercial, The one that was movie quality that reflected on Orwell's "1984 the movie "in a symbolic way. It was presented brilliantly and gave no clue until the end of the commercial, that the product being advertised was the Macintosh Computer. Only us then geeks knew of the potential of the Motorola 68000 CPU based computer that was rumored to be released during the Super Bowl. We waited in anticipation, hoping that Steve Jobs could show the world what we could do with a monitor and a keyboard. He did not let us down and started a revolution that consumed all of us in some way. I had been a Commodore computer fan and had a Commodore 64 I did my early programming on at the time. This was the age of the 300 baud modem, the BBS and Digital VAX mini computer.

Steve saw it was time to let the rest of the world in on our fun, our sacred domain, the well, the BBS I frequented at the time was our little piece of digital domain we called our own. I remember the discussions on which computer was the best, The TRS -80, The IBM PC, The APPLE II, APPLE III, The Commodore 64, and now the MAC!

New Apple 4S iphone specs

Apple's newest smartphone, the iPhone 4S, is a world phone powered by the company's speedy A5 processor, and features a new antenna design that can allow file transfers up to twice as fast as its predecessor, as well as voice recognition functionality for a new handsfree experience.

The new iPhone 4S is a "world phone," meaning it is compatible with both CDMA and GSM networks. Apple will not need to build two different models to be compatible with different carriers like AT&T and Verizon in the U.S., and Sprint has also been officially added as a carrier partner.

Apple has also expanded the iPhone lineup with a new 64GB model on the high-end, selling for $399 with a service contract. The 32GB and 16GB models remain priced at $299 and $199, respectively.

Apple iPhone 5 Launch event tomorrow at 1:00 PM EST

With 74 new carriers added since the iPhone 4 launched in 2010, Apple is predicted to easily top its personal best of 1.7 million handsets sold in three days with the launch of the fifth-generation iPhone.

Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities expects a "media blitz" and "unprecedented demand" after Apple announces its next iPhone on Tuesday, allowing the new model to "shatter" the sales records set by the iPhone 4. He noted that The iPhone is now available on 228 carriers worldwide, compared to 154 during the iPhone 4 launch in 2010, giving Apple an opportunity for even greater sales this year.
